Calling all art lovers! We have a special contest for you. No worries, you do not have to be a professional all levels are welcome as UMass Dartmouth Dining Services, under the Kendall grant, comes together to present the Kelp Me In and Fishing Fun Art and essay contest.

The rules are simple, and you have a chance to win a visa gift card. There are three levels, 2nd-8th grade, 9-12th grade and college and up. Grades 2nd-8th will focus on kelp, as well as grade 9-12, while college and up will focus on the concept of underutilized fish. Each level will have a chance to win the prize for their age category.

For the Kelp Me In contest contestants must produce original art composed of kelp. It can be drawn by hand or digital. Accompanying the drawing grades 2-8th must write one paragraph on the importance of kelp and what they learned, while grades 9-12 must write two paragraphs on the same topic.

For the Fishing Fun contest contestants must produce original art as well focusing on local underutilized fish in or area. This includes monkfish, dogfish, scup and red fish. Like the Kelp Me In contest art can be produced by hand or digitally. Along with the art contestants must submit a three-paragraph essay on the importance of utilizing underutilized fish in lieu of other fish such as cod and salmon and what they learned.

Please keep art submissions within the size of a sheet of computer paper. Materials you may need for the contest include:

● Paper

● Pencils

● Crayons

● Markers

● Paint

● Any other art material

● Computer if doing it digitally

We are so excited to see everyone’s submissions and creativity. Artwork received may be featured in our up and coming events including: Fashion for a Cause and our Kendall Conference. If interested in participating in the noted contests, please email for further information.

All artists must fill out a waiver for their work upon submission as well. Submissions are due by December 1, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. and winners will be selected by Friday January 10, 2020.
